Assistant Director, Senior Schools Technical/Vocational Programm

Applicants are invited for the post of Assistant Director, Senior Schools and Technical/Vocational Programme within the Department of Education.

 

Working under the direction of the Director of Educational Standards and Accountability and in accordance with departmental policies and procedures, the Assistant Director, Senior Schools and Technical/Vocational Programme manages the operations of the senior schools and technical/vocational programmes and provides leadership on the alternative district-wide programme to ensure that Principals discharge their duties and responsibilities efficiently and effectively and are held accountable for the organization, management and delivery of programmes to school children in accordance with the approved curricula.

 

Duties of the post will include but not be limited to:

 

·         providing leadership on the alternative programme and for the overall management and administration of the operations of the senior schools, performance of Principals within the senior schools and for evaluating the effectiveness of the delivery of the curricula to students;

·         managing and administering the on-going development and provision of technical education to prepare students for employment in occupations requiring technical skills or for entry into colleges and universities to pursue further education;

·         providing a link between the senior schools and the Bermuda College, the National Training Board and the industry partners to discuss and ascertain whether the senior schools are meeting the industry standards and requirements;

·         planning and developing the technical programmes of the senior schools and, in this regard, conducting needs analyses, consulting with industry partners, Department of Education and the National Training Board to secure their views and observations which will be incorporated in the programmes;

·         reviewing and approving annual school improvement plans developed by the Principals to ensure that they are consistent with the goals and objectives of the Department of Education;

·         monitoring the progress of the implementation of school improvement plans, reviewing reports from the Principals at the end of the school year and assessing the extent to which the plans have been achieved;

·         reviewing daily school schedules to ensure that adequate time and resources are dedicated for instruction and providing advice on the development of such schedules;

·         liaising and consulting with other professionals within the Department of Education to co-ordinate and promote the programmes and services of the Section, as well as liaising and consulting with overseas institutions to secure information on educational developments to determine whether they are applicable to Bermuda;

·         managing the provision of suitable facilities and safe working environment for staff to enable officers to operate at the highest possible standards and providing necessary equipment, goods, materials and services;

·         overseeing and preparing the annual budget of the assigned schools ensuring that the approved budget is managed in accordance with the established Financial Instructions;

·         participating in all human resources administrative activities, including selecting, orientating,  training of staff, providing advice and guidance and making recommendations for promotion, disciplinary measures, etc.

 

Applicants must possess a Master’s Degree or equivalent in Educational Administration and a Bermuda Educators Council License.  In addition, applicants must possess a minimum of five (5) years’ relevant post-qualification experience in educational administration in the Bermuda school system including three (3) years’ experience at the senior management level.

 

The Assistant Director, Senior Schools and Technical/Vocational Programme must be able to work co-operatively with all school personnel, support staff, students and parents and have a thorough understanding of the philosophy and practice of continuous quality improvement .  The Assistant Director must also have demonstrated successful experience in being a self-starter, communicating effectively at the senior level both written and verbally, and supervising and managing staff.  The successful applicant must possess presentation skills, be computer literate, results oriented, and able to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

 

Short listed applicants may be required to undergo an assessment exercise.
